    • doi.org

Schmidt et al. 2020 (Transp Res F 71:76), accepted manuscript p.9 §3.2 and Fig. 3 (checked): carsickness in the last five years: back seat 46.4%, front seat 36.7%, car driver 17.2%. Lackner 2014 (Exp Brain Res 232:2493): drivers are generally believed almost never to get sick while passengers may, and evidence supports this.

    • openstax.org

OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e §14.1: hair-cell stereocilia extend into a viscous gel (the otolithic membrane), topped by a layer of calcium carbonate crystals (otoliths). Koch 2018 (Dtsch Arztebl Int 115:687): otolith organs respond to linear acceleration because the membranes are weighted by calcium carbonate crystals. Walther 2016 (HNO 64:767): otoconia about 10 µm, >90% calcite.

    • pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Koch 2018, 'Explanatory models' (full text, agent): the otoliths (saccule, utricle) respond to linear acceleration. Bertolini & Straumann 2016 (Front Neurol 7:14), car section: the provocative stimulus in road vehicles is low-frequency horizontal linear acceleration, fore-aft (braking, accelerating) and lateral (curves) about equally; the otoliths cannot tell gravity from acceleration.

    • pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Lackner 2014, 'Much motion sickness goes unrecognized' (full text, agent): reading or looking at anything stable inside the vehicle requires suppressing the eye reflexes the vehicle motion triggers. Schmidt et al. 2020, Introduction §1.2: visual-vestibular discrepancies such as reading a book or watching a screen in a moving vehicle can make carsickness considerably worse; §3.4 Fig. 7: device use rated likely to cause carsickness by 61.7% of carsick passengers.

    • frontiersin.org

Bertolini & Straumann 2016, 'Theories on Motion Sickness' (full text, agent): the sensory mismatch theory is the most widely accepted; conflict = sensed vs expected information. Also Leung & Hon 2019, Zhang 2016, Koch 2018, Golding 2016. Limits: Lackner 2014 abstract (checked): no fully adequate theory is presently available.

Rolnick & Lubow 1991, 'Why is the driver rarely motion sick? The role of controllability in motion sickness', Ergonomics 34(7):867-879. FULL TEXT READ (author-hosted scan, pp.867-876, 25.10.2026). Rolnick: Motion Sickness and Human Performance Laboratory, Israeli Naval Hyperbaric Institute, Haifa; Lubow: Tel Aviv University. 44 males aged 19-25 with sailing experience, randomly assigned, 22 yoked pairs on one two-seat rotating platform; helmets linked by a 71 cm rod so heads moved together; left-seat subject controlled direction, speed (max 11 rpm) and stops with a joystick, the passive one also had a joystick; both heard the coming stimulus over the intercom (predictability equated). 6 min with head tilts every 15 s and 4 stops. Mean symptom score 1.7 (control) vs 2.3 (no control), t=2.05, df=42, one-tailed p<0.05; well-being declined more without control, F(1,42)=24.01, p<0.001; 5 of the 7 who asked to stop had no control.

Irmak, Pool & Happee 2021 (Exp Brain Res 239:515), full text read by Codex: real car, rear middle seat, closed road, intense slalom; 18 completed both conditions (counterbalanced); mean sickness over exposure 4.2 with outside vision blocked vs 2.3 with it; 66% vs 33% reached moderate nausea. Turner & Griffin 1999 (Ergonomics 42:444, abstract checked): about 3x less illness with a very good view of the road (12.7% vs 34.6%). Griffin & Newman 2004 (abstract checked): a forward view reduced sickness; a live video of the road did not. Kuiper, Bos & Diels 2018: a display at windscreen height caused less carsickness than at glove-box height.
